The Magic of Family Travel

Introduction:

Are you itching for adventure but hesitating because you have a newborn or young family? Fear not! Traveling with a little one can be a magical experience. As a certified Doula and mom with a lifetime passion for wanderlust, I'm here to reveal some of my travel secrets that will make your journeys not just manageable, but unforgettable. Whether you're planning an epic cross-country road adventure, soaring through the skies on a thrilling flight, or embarking on a theme park escapade, prepare for an exhilarating journey with these recommendations

  • Master the Art of Preparation

First things first, don't underestimate the power of thorough preparation. Creating a checklist that rivals the precision of NASA's launch procedures is my first secret to ensuring a smooth and stress-free journey.

Diapers? Check. Baby food? Check. Formula, enough baby clothes for any unforeseen fluid leaks, and remember a complete array of essential baby gear? Triple-check! You can never be too thorough when it comes to packing for your baby or your spouse! Don't forget about older siblings; make certain they have all their essentials ready too, so there's harmony within the family during your travels. Remember to pack some age-appropriate treats to encourage optimum behavior and harmonious relationships. A small fidget toy provided at the proper time can be a powerful tool to quiet a frustrated toddler. Don't forget to bring an extra phone charger and battery. A well-thought-out checklist will help you glide through your journey and make you the envy of everyone you encounter.

  • Choose Family-Friendly Destinations

The world offers a vast array of experiences, but not every corner is tailored to cater to your family's enjoyment. Look for destinations that exclaim "family fun." Seek out places that provide the convenience of nursing areas and private family restrooms. Don't forget to factor in accessibility. Can you easily return to your accommodations for your child's nap? Some large amusement parks have streamlined the process, making it possible to go from the park to naptime in under 20 minutes. Avoid the mistake of navigating the crowds during peak hours. Begin your day with a leisurely breakfast and remember the essential bathroom stop before leaving your room. Making the right choice regarding your destination can transform your journey into an exhilarating adventure for all involved. Be mindful not to bring your newborn to an environment that might not suit their age and preferences. While boisterous noises and flashy lights might excite their older siblings, they can quickly overwhelm even the most well-behaved newborn. Think about age-appropriate entertainment for the entire family. Whenever feasible, take turns with your partner, allowing your older children to relish the attractions while finding a tranquil spot to tend to or engage with your infant. Don't forget to take lots of pictures. It may seem like overkill snapping shots and taking endless videos but it enables you to relive the experience endless times with tremendous detail.

  • Safety, Safety, Safety

Never compromise on your child's safety. Select a car seat appropriate for their age and size and always verify FAA approval if you intend to fly. Seek advice from experts when in doubt. Moreover, ensure the car seat is correctly installed and routinely inspected for signs of wear or damage to maintain its effectiveness. Always prioritize your child's safety by following these precautions.

After reaching your destination, take a few minutes to childproof your temporary living space. Safeguard electrical outlets, eliminate any accessible hazards, and create a secure and cozy sleeping environment for your baby.

  • Pack Like a Pro

Mastering the art of packing when you're traveling with a newborn is essential. Opt for lightweight, easily portable baby gear. Think about baby carriers, car seat rollers, car seat & strollers, and travel cribs. Additionally, don't forget to pack extra baby essentials such as bottles for non-colicky babies, bottles for colicky babies, bottles to aid in nipple confusion for parents who breastfeed, pacifiers, and that beloved stuffie. Pro tip, keep your essential items in your carry-on luggage. Don't forget your portable (shush) sound machine for newborns and your sound machine for newborn-adults.

Prioritize Diaper Bag Organization: Your diaper bag will serve as a vital lifeline during your travels. Ensure it's thoughtfully organized with pockets and compartments to maintain order. Keep diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes readily accessible. It's also wise to include a compact first-aid kit for minor emergencies.

Remember Baby Health Necessities: Pack any required medications, thermometers, and health essentials tailored to your baby. Keeping your baby's healthcare provider's contact information on hand is a prudent precaution for any health-related concerns that may arise.

Opt for Multi-Functional Baby Equipment: Consider investing in versatile baby gear that can perform multiple tasks. For instance, some car seats are designed to double as strollers, eliminating the need for additional equipment. Also, check out the SnoozeShade Pack and Play Blackout Tent. It is an award-winning travel accessory that attaches to many portable cribs to give mosquito protection and provides a dark environment to help your baby sleep.

  • Nourish and Hydrate

Feeding and hydration are your superhero sidekicks during takeoff and landing as nursing or bottle-feeding can help tiny ears adjust to cabin pressure. Stock up on snacks, formula, and water to keep your little one well-fed and watered throughout the journey. For nursing parents who choose to use a cover, opt for a cover that is breathable, such as We Are AMMA. They offer a 7-in-1 nursing cover that is lightweight, breathable, and fashionable. For formula-fed babies, pre-measure formula servings into individual TSA-approved containers for easy on-the-go feeding. When possible a portable bottle warmer can be handy. Remember travel times have increased post Covid 19 so prepare for that unexpected layover or cancelation.

  • Enter the World of Distractions

Entertainment is your secret weapon to a smooth journey. Fill a bag with toys, books, and anything that'll hold your child's fascination. Check out these products available from Amazon, Erasable Doodle Pad, Esjay Busy Board Montessori Toy, Reusable-mess-free water reveal activity pad, Jumbo book of Hidden Pictures from Highlights, and the Would You Rather Game Book. If all else fails, use child-appropriate shows and music that you preload on your electronic devices. Can you imagine what the pioneers would have given to have an iPhone for the little tykes in the back of the wagon? Not to mention "Hey Siri Is Donner Pass Still Open?"

  • Embrace Flexibility

No journey is perfect, and traveling with a newborn is the epitome of unpredictability. Embrace the experience and be prepared to adapt to your child's needs. Build extra time into your schedule for bathroom breaks, feedings, and diaper changes. Be flexible and don't let life's unexpected detours stress you out. Remember your children look to you to provide a sense of security. When times get tough take a deep breath and hold onto the knowledge that you are a powerful force and you have a superpower allowing you to maintain composure and grace in the face of upset children...or an upset spouse.

  • Take the Time to Take Breaks

Long trips are like marathons, and even the tiniest travelers need to stretch their legs and let loose. Plan frequent pit stops for baby stretches, crawls, and games. These breaks are a secret ingredient for a smooth and fun journey. Look for out-of-the-way places to go for mini adventures along the way. Remember rest stops can be incredibly dirty. Handy Doula tip: bring along a supply of disposable incontinence pads as added protection on dirty changing tables and don't forget to pack enough wipes and hand sanitizer for a small country. Also, take some time and tell stories about the trips you took as a child with your family. Consider continuing your family's travel tradition or create your own. It can be as simple as purchasing a travel mascot like an antenna character or stuffed animal from a roadside stop. Ask your kids to create stories and songs about them. Packing a small roadside picnic can be a fun and inexpensive way to spend a few moments with the ones you love. Just bring plenty of bug spray and an extra roll of paper towels... make that two! Remember it's easy to get caught up in the rush of travel but some of the most your most cherished memories will come from the adventure and not the destination.

  • Hire a Professional Travel Agent

To make your family travel even more seamless, hire a professional travel agent. Don't expect that budget online travel service to answer the phone when @#&% hits the fan, especially overseas. A travel agent will relieve the stress of planning, helping you find the best family-friendly destinations, accommodations, and transportation options. They are also generally available to help you when the road gets a little rough. Having someone knowledgeable to actually call can be the difference in avoiding a travel nightmare. Additionally, consider reserving a bassinet seat if you're traveling with a small infant via air. Many airlines offer bassinet attachments that can be installed in front of bulkhead seats. These spaces can provide your baby with a secure place to rest during the flight, allowing both you and your child to have a more comfortable journey. Remember to request the bassinet seat when booking your trip with your agent, as availability may be limited. Your agent can also assist you in securing travel insurance, which is essential for unforeseen illnesses or emergencies that may occur during your trip. Having this extra layer of protection will give you peace of mind and allow you to focus on creating wonderful family memories.

Conclusion:

So, traveling with newborns and families isn't just doable; it's downright magical. With a dash of preparation, a sprinkle of flexibility, and a lot of enthusiasm, you're ready to embark on unforgettable adventures that will become cherished family memories. Pack your bags, buckle up, and dive headfirst into the exciting world of family travel. Bon voyage, and don't forget to hire a respected professional travel agent for a worry-free, adventure!
