The Challenges Encountered in Maintaining Positive Mental Health During Pregnancy and Postpartum

Introduction:

The journey of pregnancy & childbirth is a transformative experience, encompassing tremendous changes both physically & emotionally. While much of the attention understandably gravitates towards the physical aspects of pregnancy & birth, it is imperative not to underestimate the profound impact these processes have on mental well-being. The significance of mental health during pregnancy & the postpartum period cannot be emphasized enough. In this context, it is worth noting a recent CDC report from May 2023, highlighted Oklahoma as one of the states consistently grappling with alarmingly high rates of maternal mortality. Shockingly, Oklahoma's maternal mortality rate stands at 47.5 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, far surpassing the national average of 33 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. In light of these concerning statistics, the presence of a Doula has emerged as a pivotal factor in ensuring a seamless transition into parenthood. Communities of color & underrepresented groups often experience disproportionately higher maternal suicide & mortality rates, highlighting the urgent need for equity-focused healthcare reforms.


The Emotional Rollercoaster of Pregnancy:

Pregnancy is a rollercoaster of emotions. It's not uncommon for expectant individuals to experience a whirlwind of feelings, including joy, anxiety, fear, & uncertainty. Hormonal fluctuations, body changes, financial concerns, & the anticipation of becoming a parent can all contribute to these emotional ups & downs. It's vital to understand that neglecting your mental health during pregnancy can have lasting consequences, including postpartum depression & anxiety.



Why Mental Health Matters:

  1. Impact on the Baby: Research has shown that a mother's emotional state during pregnancy can directly affect the developing fetus. Stress, anxiety, & depression can lead to preterm birth, low birth weight, & developmental issues for the baby.

  2. Maternal Well-being: A mother's mental health plays a crucial role in her overall well-being. Neglecting mental health can lead to exhaustion, feelings of isolation, & an increased risk of postpartum mood disorders that can create overwhelming emotional urges. Far to often this can result in infanticide, & or suicide

  3. Bonding and Attachment: A positive emotional state during pregnancy can facilitate bonding with the new baby & help establish a secure attachment, which is vital for the child's & parents emotional development.


The Urgent Need for Support:

Many postpartum deaths occur between 9 to 12 months after childbirth. However, it is crucial to emphasize that these statistics represent more than mere numbers; they symbolize the actual lives & families entwined within this heartbreaking reality. In the United States, over 700 women face the tragic fate of losing their lives due to suicide or other mental health-related complications during pregnancy or within the postpartum period every year. This somber statistic serves as a stark reminder that mental health during this critical phase can literally mean the difference between life & death.


These individuals, who are parents, daughters, sisters, & friends, leave behind shattered families & communities, & their infants are left without the love & nurturing they so desperately require. This is a heart-wrenching tragedy that should compel each one of us to take action.


A Call to Action:

  1. Prioritize Mental Health: We must prioritize mental health during pregnancy & with special focus on the postpartum period, just like we prioritize physical health. This begins with recognizing that seeking help for mental health challenges is a sign of strength, not weakness!

  2. Support and Normalize Doulas: Doulas play a vital role in supporting maternal mental health. By advocating for greater access to Doula services & integrating them into standard maternal care, we can provide crucial emotional support to expectant individuals.

  3. Raise Awareness: We need to break the stigma surrounding maternal mental health issues & suicide. Open conversations & awareness campaigns can make a significant difference in encouraging people to seek help and support. We cannot be afraid to ask the question "How are you feeling?"

  4. Policy Change: Advocate for Healthcare policies that ensure every pregnant person has access to quality mental health resources & support. This includes insurance coverage for mental health services & comprehensive maternal care that provides realistic mental health assessments.

  5. Community Support: Build a strong network of support for new parents within communities. Friends, family, & neighbors can all play a role in providing emotional support during pregnancy & especially throughout the postpartum period.

In conclusion, nurturing mental health during pregnancy & the postpartum period is not just an option; it's a NECASSITY. The statistics regarding maternal mental health & suicide are a grim reminder of the urgent need for action. Let us come together as a society to support, uplift, & protect the mental well-being of expectant & postpartum individuals. By doing so, we can save lives, strengthen families, & ensure that every child gets the loving, healthy start they deserve. The time for action is now.
